AoT Santa Cruz #13 – Using Stars to Study the Cosmos on Scales Large and Small – Thursday, April 4th, 2019 @ New Bohemia Brewing Co.

Mark your calendars!

Astronomy on Tap returns on Thursday, April 4th at 6:30 pm at New Bohemia Brewing Co, in Santa Cruz, CA.

While stars are fascinating in their own right, stars can also be powerful probes of other astrophysical objects. Emily Cunningham will discuss how we study stars as pieces of galaxies. She will explain how we measure and use the motions of stars in the Milky Way to map the structure of our home Galaxy, including the components that are dark.

How do we know planets outside our solar system exist? Do we really know what they’re made of? Do worlds like Tatooine really exist? Erica Gonzales will discuss how we use stars to find planets, the different ways another planet’s “Sun” can tell us if it is as big as Jupiter or as small as Earth… and how having two Suns makes things interesting.

Our events are for everyone, so please bring your curiosity, questions, and love for space. Happy hour extends for the duration of the event, in addition to food trucks, trivia, and swag! Astronomy on Tap is free of charge and open to all ages
