Summary: During the past half century, a plethora of molecules have been detected in space: from simple molecules such as molecular hydrogen and carbon monoxide to complex organic molecules. These molecules are of particular importance to understanding the formation of stars and the availability of building blocks essential for the formation of life in young planetary systems. I will talk about how astronomers observe these molecules, what they tell us about the molecular universe, and how astronomers model the chemistry of space.
