Space Drafts 20: Sneak a peak at some of the earliest galaxies in our Universe!!! at Astronomy on Tap – Tucson, AZ, Jan. 27th at the Borderlands Brewing Co.

20.Livermore

This month, #SpaceDrafts is with Dr. Rachael Livermore (UT-Austin):

Fun with Gravitational Lensing! The First Galaxies Unveiled with Einstein’s Telescopes

Pandora’s Cluster – Abell 2744. Most of the mass – 75% of it – isn’t in the form of the visible light you see, but is contained in the mysterious dark matter, whose nature we still do not understand.

But we can measure it’s effect.

The ghostly arcs and thin lines aren’t image compression artifacts. These are distant galaxies, behind the cluster. Their shapes are sheared, distorted and magnified as light from them travels through the space, curved by the enormous mass of the cluster. Join Rachael for a tour through the Frontier Fields using the Hubble Space Telescope, and find out how she uses gravitational lensing to learn what happened a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away!

Answer her tricky questions for a shot at cool prizes – we’ll have telescopes setup outside at sunset if it is clear!

Where?
The Borderlands Brewing Company (119 E. Toole Ave., Tucson)

When?

Wednesday, January 27, 7.00pm (Stargazing starts at Sunset)

As always, Space Drafts is FREE and open to all ages! Bring your four-legged friends too!

  1. Most of the mass – 75% of it – isn’t in the form of the visible light you see, but is contained in the mysterious dark matter, whose nature we still do not understand. Where such information?
