Astronomy on Tap Triangle #14: Tuesday, April 2, 2019

Come check out Astronomy on Tap Triangle, our North Carolina chapter of short, engaging talks about astronomy over beer held at the taproom of Fullsteam Brewery in Durham, NC — this is our fourteenth event on Tuesday, April 2!

Join us for a noteworthy night of nuclear physics (k)nowledge: Dr. Chris Walter* and Dr. Reyco Henning** will teach us how to investigate dark energy and dark matter, both with and without telescopes!

* Dr. Chris Walter is a Professor of Physics at Duke University, whose research goes both underground to detect cosmic neutrino events, and to the heavens with observational cosmology. He has performed work with the Super-Kamiokande neutrino observatory collaboration in Japan, and is now working at Duke to prepare for the coming of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) within the next decade. Chris received his B.A. from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1989, and completed his graduate studies at the Caltech in 1997. He joined the faculty at Duke in 2004, where he has been making strides in particle physics and cosmology research ever since.

** Dr. Reyco Henning is a Professor of Physics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and his work focuses on understanding strange particles such as neutrinos, antimatter, and dark matter. To do this, he delves underground to measure incoming cosmic particles and to isolate his experiments from environmental contaminants. Reyco received his B.S. from the University of Denver in 1998, before conducting his graduate work at MIT. After earning his PhD in 2003, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Lawrence Berkeley National labs, before joining the department at UNC in 2007.

Our FREE Astronomy on Tap events feature accessible, engaging science presentations on topics ranging from planets to black holes to the beginning of the Universe. There is always lots of time to ask questions and interact with the presenters and other scientists who inevitably stick around for the beer. Be sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook to get updates on future events!
