Mark your calendars!

Astronomy on Tap returns on Thursday, February 6th at 6:30 pm

Planets Under Construction

Not so long ago, everything we thought we knew about planet formation was based on the 8 planets in our own solar system (and Pluto, for awhile there). Thanks to the investment in new observatories and the hard work of astronomers, we now know of thousands of planets beyond our solar system. The incredible diversity we see in these new-to-us planets upended what we thought we knew about planet and solar system formation.

Astronomers are looking at young stars across the electromagnetic spectrum to try to catch planet formation in action. How quickly do planets form? Where do planets form in relation to their sun? Are planets the cause of the oddly beautiful gaps, spirals, and asymmetries we see in the dusty disks around young stars?

At the next Astronomy on Tap, you can hear the University of Victoria Astronomer Nienke van der Marel and UC Santa Cruz’s own Steph Sallum talk about planets under construction! What we know and what we need to know. No hard hat required!
