Astronomy on Tap in the Triangle: Exploring the Universe with Gravitational Waves

October 2 @ 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM EDT

Come check out Astronomy on Tap Triangle, our North Carolina chapter of short and engaging talks about astronomy over beer. Find us in the taproom of Fullsteam Brewery in Durham, NC from 7-8:30 PM on Wednesday, October 2nd!

To perceive anything in the universe, signals—whether light, particles, or gravitational waves—must travel to us. Since the dawn of astronomy, we have primarily explored the night sky using telescopes and light waves. In 2015, a new era of astronomy began with the groundbreaking detection of gravitational waves from the merger of two black holes, with masses of 36 and 29 solar masses, respectively. This event released energy equivalent to about three times the mass of the Sun in the form of gravitational waves—an amount of energy greater than the combined electromagnetic energy of all other observable objects in the universe at that instant. Join us as Dr. Naresh Adhikari guides us on a journey through the universe via multi-messenger astronomy, where light, particles, and gravitational waves unite to reveal the universe’s most powerful collisions and explosions.

Don’t forget to get there on time for a quick round of astronomy trivia and special prizes!

There is always lots of time to ask questions and interact with the presenters and other scientists who inevitably stick around for the beer. We can’t wait to see you there!
