Astronomy on Tap Taipei: Building the Kosmos

In BUILDING THE KOSMOS, we’ll tell the story of how the Universe we see around us today came to be. Since the very beginning, starting with the Big Bang some 13.7 billion years ago, the Universe has been evolving. It started simply, with a mere uneven distribution of elementary particles… but in time this would give rise to the large scale structures of the cosmos — massive galaxy clusters, concentrated along spectacularly long filaments of dark matter, and found at the cusps of the vast cosmic voids — unimaginably empty regions of space spanning tens or sometimes hundreds of millions of light years. And within the colossal galaxy clusters, the galaxies themselves were drawn together by gravity and collided, creating the enormous spiral and elliptical galaxies we see today, some hosting trillions of stars each. In fact, these titanic collisions continue to the present day.

Featuring talks by Dr. Rogério Monteiro-Oliveira and Dr. Junsup Shim (both astronomers at Academia Sinica).
