SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Bristol: AI in Astronomy and Galaxy Clusters
DESCRIPTION:NO TICKETS NEEDED \nAstronomy on Tap Bristol is back with another set of talks for our next event: join us at The Lansdown on Wednesday\, the 14th of October for an exciting evening of astronomy! \nOur next Bristol event features talks by Dr. Grant Stevens\, a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Bristol\, who will talk to us about how we use AI in astronomy followed by Ileana Klein\, a University of Bristol Ph.D. researcher\, explaining how astronomers use different wavelengths of light to study galaxy clusters. We will also have an astronomy themed quiz where you can win some prizes! \nThe event is FREE and all are welcome! We operate on a first come first-seated basis\, so make sure you get there on time to secure a chair. \nGiving AI a Telescope: What Could Possibly Go Wrong? – Grant Stevens \nAI is getting very good at spotting patterns\, making predictions\, and occasionally getting things very wrong. In this talk\, we’ll look at some of AI’s more entertaining mistakes\, then ask what happens when we point it at the night sky. Can it find new stars and galaxies or just invent them? And how do we know when to trust what it sees? \nUnveiling the Secrets of Galaxy Clusters: More Than Meets the Naked Eye – Ileana Klein \nIs your favourite flavour of astrophysics black holes? Or cosmology? Or perhaps you’re a fan of all astrophysics? Galaxy clusters contain all your favourite things and more! As the largest gravitationally bound structures in the Universe\, galaxy clusters are sensitive to most astrophysics\, and looking at them at different wavelengths can unveil different extraordinary characteristics and processes. From the famous Bullet Cluster to the new FornaX survey\, we’ll explore how the Euclid and XMM-Newton telescopes give us different views of these giant systems and what we can learn through their complimentary observations. \nWhere? \nFind us upstairs at the Lansdown in Clifton! \nThe Lansdown \n8 Clifton Road \nBristol BS8 1AF \nWhen? \n14th October \nDoors open at 18:00\, first talk at 18:30! \nAstronomy on Tap Bristol runs every month\, dates may change while we get settled into a routine! \n About Astronomy on Tap \nAstronomy on Tap is a monthly astronomy outreach event that takes place all around the world. Events feature accessible\, engaging presentations on space and science topics ranging from planets to black holes to galaxies to the beginning of the Universe\, along with trivia\, games\, prizes\, music\, and other surprises!

SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Lausanne #15
DESCRIPTION:For this fifteenth edition of Astronomy on Tap\, we are diving into some important questions: while humanity is exploring space\, are we sure we’re not trashing the place? Tonight\, let’s talk about space pollution\, from dead satellites to fragments travelling at 28\,000 km/h. \nJoining us are: \n• Chloé Carrière : She will present “Espace Commun”\, a project that is all about answering questions on space\, regardless of who is asking. \n• Élise Thérond : She will explain the OrbitAL project :  developing a sensor to study stratospheric metal deposits from spacecraft re-entry and their reactivity e.g. with ozone\, using custom sampling hardware and biosensor cells. \n• Angelina Frolova : She will explain the burden shifting problem within the space sustainability paradox : when we encourage de-orbiting satellites\, which burn in the atmosphere as they re-enter causing atmospheric pollution. \nGet ready for an evening filled with fascinating discussions\, science\, and great company!

SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Bristol: Exoplanets' Star Signs and Cosmic Giants
DESCRIPTION:Hope everyone is ready for another night of cosmic fun\, because Astronomy on Tap Bristol is back for our September event! \nOur next event is on Wednesday the 16th of September. \nJoin us at The Lansdown for an evening of astronomy\, great company\, and stellar conversations. This month’s line-up features two fantastic talks by Dr Dan Valentine\, University of Bristol Post-Doctoral Researcher\, telling us about the Star Signs of Exoplanets and Dr Hattie Stewart\, University of Oxford Post-Doctoral Fellow\, who will show us how to go Hunting for Cosmic Giants! \nExpect delectable drinks\, a fun space‑themed quiz\, and prizes that are out of this world! \nThe event is FREE and open to everyone! We’ll be doing tickets for seats this time\, but there will also be standing spaces available without tickets\, so come along nice and early to make sure you get a good spot. Tickets are available through Headfirst here: https://hdfst.uk/e161534 \nThe Star Signs of Exoplanets: Astronomy or Astrology? – Dr Dan Valentine \nAstronomers and astrologers have waged a long\, bitter war over whether people think of science or star signs when they hear the word “astro”. In this talk\, we’re going to bridge the divide by answering the question: are the personalities of exoplanets written in the stars? Is WASP-12b two-faced because she’s a Gemini? Is WASP-17b chaotic because she’s a Scorpio? If the TRAPPIST system is an Aquarius\, then where’s all the water? Come along for a journey through the star signs of exoplanets\, and discover what their cosmic personalities can tell us about their physical properties. \nHunting for Cosmic Giants – Dr Hattie Stewart \nYou look up at the night sky. Thousands of stars glitter against the darkness\, but your eyes can only see so much. Beyond the visible realm lies another sky: vast\, ancient\, and filled with radio signals travelling the cosmos. Somewhere out there\, giants are hiding. Venture into the Radio Realm in this science-talk meets one-shot. New telescopes have mapped more of the radio sky than ever before\, but thousands of sources crowd your map. Fortunately\, you will not be travelling alone. Trained in the ancient art of pattern recognition\, U-Net will guide you as you encounter galaxies\, ravenous black holes and perhaps the creature you seek. Roll for perception. \nWhere? \nFind us upstairs at the Lansdown in Clifton! \nThe Lansdown \n8 Clifton Road \nBristol BS8 1AF \nWhen? \n16th September \nDoors open at 18:00\, first talk at 18:30! \nAstronomy on Tap Bristol runs every month\, dates may change while we get settled into a routine! \n  \nAbout Astronomy on Tap \nAstronomy on Tap is a monthly astronomy outreach event that takes place all around the world. Events feature accessible\, engaging presentations on space and science topics ranging from planets to black holes to galaxies to the beginning of the Universe\, along with trivia\, games\, prizes\, music\, and other surprises!

SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Bristol: Exoplanet Weather and Eclipses
DESCRIPTION:Hope everyone is excited to learn about astronomy because we are getting ready for our August edition of Astronomy on Tap Bristol! \nOur next event is on Wednesday the 19th of August. \nDrop in at The Lansdown for a night of astronomy and great company! Our next Bristol gathering features stellar talks from Denis Sergeev\, University of Bristol Lecturer\, who’ll take us on a Hitchhiker’s Guide to Exoplanet Weather\, and Darius Michienzi\, University of Bristol Ph.D. researcher\, telling us about Eclipses: Past\, Present\, and Future. \nExpect great drinks\, a fun space‑themed quiz\, and prizes that are truly astronomical! \nThe event is FREE and all are welcome! We operate on a first come first served basis\, so make sure you get there on time. \nThe Hitchhiker’s Guide to Exoplanet Weather – Denis Sergeev  \nDon’t panic – the galaxy is full of worlds with truly terrible weather! Winds faster than the speed of sound\, rain made of molten glass\, and planets where one side never sees daylight. In this talk\, I’ll be your guide to the strangest climates in the cosmos\, showing how scientists use the same computer models that forecast Earth’s weather to simulate alien atmospheres light years away. And while the ultimate answer might be 42\, the real question is: could any of these worlds host life? Bring a towel. \nEclipses: Past\, Present\, and Future – Darius Michienzi  \nEurope will once again\, be treated to the cosmic coincidence of a total solar eclipse this August. But why is this event so unique to Earth\, and what did observers in the past make of it? This talk traces the history of eclipses\, how they came to be possible in our corner of the solar system\, what a modern observer should look for\, and why the Earth-Moon system is slowly bringing total eclipses to an end. \nWhere? \nFind us upstairs at the Lansdown in Clifton! \nThe Lansdown \n8 Clifton Road \nBristol BS8 1AF \nWhen? \n19th August \nDoors open at 18:00\, first talk at 18:30! \nAstronomy on Tap Bristol runs every month\, dates may change while we get settled into a routine! \n  \nAbout Astronomy on Tap \nAstronomy on Tap is a monthly astronomy outreach event that takes place all around the world. SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Bristol: Planets and Particles
DESCRIPTION:Drop in at The Lansdown for an out of this world evening of astronomy! Our second Bristol event will feature talks from Joshua Ford\, University of Bristol Ph.D. researcher\, who will teach us about why Titan is the most interesting place in the solar system and Vedanshu Mahajan\, University of Bristol Ph.D. researcher\, discussing “Astroparticles and Dark Matter”. We will have a fun quiz and maybe even some prizes! \nThe event is FREE and all are welcome! We operate on a first come first served basis\, so make sure you get there on time. \nTitan: The Most Interesting Place in the Solar System – Joshua Ford \nSaturn’s largest moon\, Titan\, is an alien\, yet surprisingly familiar world. It is the only place besides Earth where liquid flows across its surface to form lakes and seas\, and it’s the only moon with a thick\, dense atmosphere. Yet\, don’t be fooled by its Earth-like appearance. With a surface temperature of -179℃\, the lakes are filled with liquid methane that evaporate to form clouds and drive weather systems. Water ice covers the surface as hard as rock\, while the atmosphere is rich in plastic derivatives\, organic compounds and complex chemistry. In this talk\, I will showcase discoveries from spacecraft and telescope observations and explain why Titan may be the most interesting place in the Solar System. \nAstroparticles & Dark Matter – Vedanshu Mahajan \nIn the context of deep underground detectors\, we’ll be going into why dark matter is a clear missing puzzle piece that we absolutely must find at some point in our future human history. We’ll then talk about the physics of deep underground detectors\, our main methods of searching for them\, and implications of different results in the field! \nWhere? \nFind us upstairs at the Lansdown in Clifton! \nThe Lansdown \n8 Clifton Road \nBristol BS8 1AF \nWhen? \n16th July \nDoors open at 18:00\, first talk at 18:30! \nAstronomy on Tap Bristol runs every month\, dates may change while we get settled into a routine! \n  \nAbout Astronomy on Tap \nAstronomy on Tap is a monthly astronomy outreach event that takes place all around the world. SUMMARY:AoT Lausanne during EAS
DESCRIPTION:Join Astronomy on Tap Lausanne for fun space talks\, drinks\, and a relaxed evening to explore the Universe together! \n\n\n\n\nA special edition of Astronomy on Tap Lausanne will be held during EAS (European Astronomical Society) Annual Meeting\, and you’re invited to attend! The event will take place on Thursday\, July 2nd at 7pm at Barberousse Lausanne Bar. It is open to everyone\, we’re bringing together students\, researchers\, the general public\, and for this special edition\, many EAS attendees\, to share space science in a fun and accessible way. \nThis event is organized in collaboration with Emily Rice from Astronomy on Tap HQ and Space@yourService\, the EPFL space promotion association that runs Astronomy on Tap Lausanne. \nIf you’d like to join us (and it’s 100% free to do so) please RSVP here and let us know! This is essential so we can make sure we don’t have more people attending than the venue can accommodate. \nOne of the things to look forward to on the night is an Astronomer Bingo game. We’ll collect responses from any wonderful astronomers willing to take part\, make bingo cards for our non-astronomer attendees\, and encourage off-stage interactions between attendees in order to fill their bingo cards. As part of this\, we would like to collect from you: an unusual word\, term\, or phrase used in your field – something unusual & expected to get conversations going! This information will be added to bingo cards randomly\, and our non-astronomer attendees will interact with our astronomer attendees to tick off as much of their bingo card as possible. Hopefully\, we’ll see you there! Please select the Astronomer Bingo Participant ticket if you wish to join\, otherwise\, select general admission. \nFor any extra info\, you can check the Q&A\, contact us on Instagram (@epfl_spaceatyourservice) or by email (spaceatyourservice@epfl.ch)

Winners get astronomy goodies to take home! \nProgram 25. \n\n“Cosmic Hide-and-Seek: What Eclipses Tell Us About Binary Stars” – Dr. Emma Bordier (University of Cologne)\n\nThis August\, millions of people will look up to watch a solar eclipse in Spain\, as the Moon briefly hides the Sun from view. But did you know that similar eclipses occur throughout our Galaxy every day? By catching these stellar eclipses\, astronomers can uncover the secrets of stars: their masses\, sizes\, and even their ultimate fate. Join us on a journey through the hidden lives of stellar couples and discover how these distant eclipses reveal some of the most spectacular phenomena in the Universe\, and\, ultimately\, the story of our cosmic origins.

SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Bristol: Launch Edition
DESCRIPTION:Drop in at The Lansdown for an out of this world evening of astronomy! Our inaugural Bristol event will feature talks from Joe Hall\, University of Bristol Ph.D. researcher\, who will teach us about “The Whys and Hows of X-ray Astronomy” and Teresa Matamoro\, University of Bristol Ph.D. researcher\, discussing “The secret life of accreting Black Holes”. We will have a fun quiz and maybe even some prizes! \n  \nThe event is FREE and all are welcome! \n  \nThe Whys and Hows of X-ray Astronomy – Joe Hall \n  \nThe universe has an appointment at the radiology department! In this talk I will explain a brief history of the field\, how our telescopes create images from light emitted by distant objects\, and explore why these images matter and what we can learn when we look beyond the visible range. From clusters of galaxies to black holes\, and even planets around distant stars X-rays are continuing to prove themselves as a key part in an astronomer’s toolkit to diagnose the mysteries of the universe. \n  \nThe secret life of accreting Black Holes – Teresa Matamoro \n  \nBlack holes have a reputation for being terrifying objects in the universe that devour anything that gets too close. But that’s only half the story\, as black holes are also the architects of galaxies. They don’t just consume matter from galaxies; they also feed and shape them! Through powerful jets and energetic winds\, black holes influence the evolution of their host galaxies. In this talk\, I’ll give an introduction of what black holes are\, why they are important\, and how we can study and even photograph them! \n  \nWhere? \n  \nFind us upstairs at the Lansdown in Clifton! \n  \nThe Lansdown \n8 Clifton Road \nBristol BS8 1AF \n  \n  \nWhen? \n17th June \nDoors open at 17:45\, first talk at 18:00! \n  \nAstronomy on Tap Bristol runs on the 3rd Wednesday of every month. \n  \n  \nAbout Astronomy on Tap \nAstronomy on Tap is a monthly astronomy outreach event that takes place all around the world. Events feature accessible\, engaging presentations on space and science topics ranging from planets to black holes to galaxies to the beginning of the Universe\, along with trivia\, games\, prizes\, music\, and other surprises!
