SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Bristol: AI in Astronomy and Galaxy Clusters
DESCRIPTION:NO TICKETS NEEDED \nAstronomy on Tap Bristol is back with another set of talks for our next event: join us at The Lansdown on Wednesday\, the 14th of October for an exciting evening of astronomy! \nOur next Bristol event features talks by Dr. Grant Stevens\, a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Bristol\, who will talk to us about how we use AI in astronomy followed by Ileana Klein\, a University of Bristol Ph.D. researcher\, explaining how astronomers use different wavelengths of light to study galaxy clusters. We will also have an astronomy themed quiz where you can win some prizes! \nThe event is FREE and all are welcome! We operate on a first come first-seated basis\, so make sure you get there on time to secure a chair. \nGiving AI a Telescope: What Could Possibly Go Wrong? – Grant Stevens \nAI is getting very good at spotting patterns\, making predictions\, and occasionally getting things very wrong. In this talk\, we’ll look at some of AI’s more entertaining mistakes\, then ask what happens when we point it at the night sky. Can it find new stars and galaxies or just invent them? And how do we know when to trust what it sees? \nUnveiling the Secrets of Galaxy Clusters: More Than Meets the Naked Eye – Ileana Klein \nIs your favourite flavour of astrophysics black holes? Or cosmology? Or perhaps you’re a fan of all astrophysics? Galaxy clusters contain all your favourite things and more! As the largest gravitationally bound structures in the Universe\, galaxy clusters are sensitive to most astrophysics\, and looking at them at different wavelengths can unveil different extraordinary characteristics and processes. From the famous Bullet Cluster to the new FornaX survey\, we’ll explore how the Euclid and XMM-Newton telescopes give us different views of these giant systems and what we can learn through their complimentary observations. \nWhere? \nFind us upstairs at the Lansdown in Clifton! \nThe Lansdown \n8 Clifton Road \nBristol BS8 1AF \nWhen? \n14th October \nDoors open at 18:00\, first talk at 18:30! \nAstronomy on Tap Bristol runs every month\, dates may change while we get settled into a routine! \n About Astronomy on Tap \nAstronomy on Tap is a monthly astronomy outreach event that takes place all around the world. Events feature accessible\, engaging presentations on space and science topics ranging from planets to black holes to galaxies to the beginning of the Universe\, along with trivia\, games\, prizes\, music\, and other surprises!
