SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap - Louisville: Gas in Galaxies
DESCRIPTION:The Gas the Built the Universe: How Galaxies Breathe\, Grow and Die\nKyle Cook\, U Louisville \nThe story of the Universe is the slow journey of collecting gas and building remarkable structures like stars\, planets\, and at least one race of beings who dare to ask grand questions. Galaxies are where this story is told. These “island universes” live and die through a cycle of gas flowing in\, forming stars\, and being blown back out in a type of cosmic breath. Behind our understanding of this cycle is a cast of historical figures who proved that galaxies are far more than a collection of stars. In this talk we will follow the people\, and the gas\, that built the Universe we see today.  Come hear details!

SUMMARY:Astro on Tap Victoria: Our Galaxy Through Time - LAUNCH!
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, we are launching Astronomy on Tap in Victoria\, British Columbia! These are fun and free outreach events where astronomers give presentations on exciting science topics at local bars. Victoria is home to several world-class science institutions\, and we are thrilled to showcase our island’s fascinating research in a casual bar setting where everyone can learn. \nThe launch event will be held on Thursday\, July 30th\, at the Vicious Poodle\, a fantastic LGBTQ+ safe bar downtown. Doors open @6pm and the talk begins @6:30pm. Stick around for space-themed trivia afterwards\, and of course\, enjoy the food and drinks served by our incredible host! \nOur very first speaker will be Dr. Akshara Viswanathan\, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Victoria studying stars in our very own Milky Way Galaxy. Dr. Viswanathan will present\, “Our Galaxy Through Time: The Turbulent Past\, Ordered Present\, and Eventful Future” \n~While our Milky Way Galaxy appears as a serene band of light across the night sky\, its current structure is the result of billions of years of small and large galactic collisions. In this talk\, I will trace the story of our Galaxy\, from the chaotic mergers that built its foundation to the ancient stellar birth that shaped its current form. I will then walk through how our Galaxy continues to grow today by interacting with smaller neighboring systems\, such as the Magellanic Clouds. Finally\, I will look toward the distant future\, where gravity will draw our Galaxy and Andromeda together into a new\, combined structure. Join me to discover how current telescope observations allow me to reconstruct the complex narrative of our galactic home and its place in a changing universe.~ \nCome on out to learn some exciting science with us! We hope to see you all there!

SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Flagstaff | The View from Mount Graham: What it Means to Do Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:Join Lowell Observatory and Mother Road Brewing Co. on July 28th at 6:30pm for Astronomy on Tap! Listen to fascinating science talks\, play trivia to win out-of-this-world prizes\, and of course\, enjoy Mother Road brews on tap. Come early\, seats fill up fast! \nThis month’s speaker is Kennedy Farrell PhD candidate in Astronomy & Planetary Science at Northern Arizona University. She will be talking about about how observational astronomy is changing as robotic observatories\, massive sky surveys\, and artificial intelligence transform how discoveries are made\, while the long\, unglamorous nights operating telescopes become less common. Through stories from the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope on Mount Graham\, from observing runs at one of the darkest sites in the world to endangered red squirrels and wildfires\, this talk explores what it looks like to do astronomy in practice. In the era of petabyte-sized astronomical data archives\, discoveries of the asteroids and comets that tell the story of the early solar system are made by Citizen Scientist volunteers examining these haystacks of data. As astronomy continues to evolve and data haystacks grow\, the view from Mount Graham reveals the fundamentally human practice of looking up.

DESCRIPTION:Drop in at The Lansdown for an out of this world evening of astronomy! Our second Bristol event will feature talks from Joshua Ford\, University of Bristol Ph.D. researcher\, who will teach us about why Titan is the most interesting place in the solar system and Vedanshu Mahajan\, University of Bristol Ph.D. researcher\, discussing “Astroparticles and Dark Matter”. We will have a fun quiz and maybe even some prizes! \nThe event is FREE and all are welcome! We operate on a first come first served basis\, so make sure you get there on time. \nTitan: The Most Interesting Place in the Solar System – Joshua Ford \nSaturn’s largest moon\, Titan\, is an alien\, yet surprisingly familiar world. It is the only place besides Earth where liquid flows across its surface to form lakes and seas\, and it’s the only moon with a thick\, dense atmosphere. Yet\, don’t be fooled by its Earth-like appearance. With a surface temperature of -179℃\, the lakes are filled with liquid methane that evaporate to form clouds and drive weather systems. Water ice covers the surface as hard as rock\, while the atmosphere is rich in plastic derivatives\, organic compounds and complex chemistry. In this talk\, I will showcase discoveries from spacecraft and telescope observations and explain why Titan may be the most interesting place in the Solar System. \nAstroparticles & Dark Matter – Vedanshu Mahajan \nIn the context of deep underground detectors\, we’ll be going into why dark matter is a clear missing puzzle piece that we absolutely must find at some point in our future human history. We’ll then talk about the physics of deep underground detectors\, our main methods of searching for them\, and implications of different results in the field! \nWhere? \nFind us upstairs at the Lansdown in Clifton! \nThe Lansdown \n8 Clifton Road \nBristol BS8 1AF \nWhen? \n16th July \nDoors open at 18:00\, first talk at 18:30! \nAstronomy on Tap Bristol runs every month\, dates may change while we get settled into a routine! \n  \nAbout Astronomy on Tap \nAstronomy on Tap is a monthly astronomy outreach event that takes place all around the world. Events feature accessible\, engaging presentations on space and science topics ranging from planets to black holes to galaxies to the beginning of the Universe\, along with trivia\, games\, prizes\, music\, and other surprises!

Obwohl man angesichts der großen Zahl an Sternen meinen könnte\, dass ihre Entstehung schnell und einfach abläuft\, gibt es viele Effekte\, die die Sternentstehung erschweren – und zugleich dennoch ermöglichen. \n\n“Cosmic Hide-and-Seek: What Eclipses Tell Us About Binary Stars” – Dr. Emma Bordier (University of Cologne)\n\nThis August\, millions of people will look up to watch a solar eclipse in Spain\, as the Moon briefly hides the Sun from view. But did you know that similar eclipses occur throughout our Galaxy every day? By catching these stellar eclipses\, astronomers can uncover the secrets of stars: their masses\, sizes\, and even their ultimate fate. Join us on a journey through the hidden lives of stellar couples and discover how these distant eclipses reveal some of the most spectacular phenomena in the Universe\, and\, ultimately\, the story of our cosmic origins.
