SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap - Louisville: Gas in Galaxies
DESCRIPTION:The Gas the Built the Universe: How Galaxies Breathe\, Grow and Die\nKyle Cook\, U Louisville \nThe story of the Universe is the slow journey of collecting gas and building remarkable structures like stars\, planets\, and at least one race of beings who dare to ask grand questions. Galaxies are where this story is told. These “island universes” live and die through a cycle of gas flowing in\, forming stars\, and being blown back out in a type of cosmic breath. Behind our understanding of this cycle is a cast of historical figures who proved that galaxies are far more than a collection of stars. In this talk we will follow the people\, and the gas\, that built the Universe we see today.  Come hear details!

SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Rhode Island #10
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, July 29th\, at 6:30 PM at Moniker for an evening of astronomy talks\, trivia\, and exciting prizes! This month’s featured talk is “Apollo to Artemis II and Beyond: Exploring and Living on the Moon” by Prof. Jim Head \nThe recent exciting Artemis II mission results build on a foundation established during the Apollo lunar exploration program over a half-century ago\, and are part of a longer-term strategy to live “off planet” on the Moon and Mars.  Where is humanity heading and why\, and how do the exciting Artemis II results fit into this picture? \n  \nSpeaker bio: \nProf. Jim Head \nDepartment of Earth\, Environmental and Planetary Sciences\, Brown University\, Providence\, RI 02912 \nEmail: james_head@brown.edu \nJim Head earned an undergraduate degree from Washington & Lee University (1964) and a PhD from Brown University (1969).  From 1968 to 1972\, while serving at NASA\, he participated in the selection of landing sites for the Apollo Lunar Exploration Program\, in training Astronaut crews in geology and surface exploration\, in planning and evaluating the package of experiments to be deployed on the Moon\, in mission operations in Houston during lunar surface exploration\, and in preliminary analysis of the lunar samples returned by the Astronauts. He continues to be involved in training of NASA Astronauts. His research centers on the study of geological processes that form and modify planetary surfaces and has followed up his research on volcanism\, tectonism and glaciation with field studies on active volcanoes in Hawaii and at Mt. St. Helens\, on volcanic deposits on the seafloor with three deep-sea submersible dives\, and during five field seasons in the Antarctic Dry Valleys\, and one in the Arctic. He has participated in over 20 US and International space missions\, and is currently working on active missions to the Moon\, Mars\, Mercury and Venus. He has taught planetary geoscience at Brown University since 1973 and has been principal advisor to over 55 Master’s Degree recipients and over 50 PhD recipients. \n  \n Arrive on time to test your knowledge with astronomy trivia and win special prizes—don’t miss out!

SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Flagstaff | The View from Mount Graham: What it Means to Do Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:Join Lowell Observatory and Mother Road Brewing Co. on July 28th at 6:30pm for Astronomy on Tap! Listen to fascinating science talks\, play trivia to win out-of-this-world prizes\, and of course\, enjoy Mother Road brews on tap. Come early\, seats fill up fast! \nThis month’s speaker is Kennedy Farrell PhD candidate in Astronomy & Planetary Science at Northern Arizona University. She will be talking about about how observational astronomy is changing as robotic observatories\, massive sky surveys\, and artificial intelligence transform how discoveries are made\, while the long\, unglamorous nights operating telescopes become less common. Through stories from the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope on Mount Graham\, from observing runs at one of the darkest sites in the world to endangered red squirrels and wildfires\, this talk explores what it looks like to do astronomy in practice. In the era of petabyte-sized astronomical data archives\, discoveries of the asteroids and comets that tell the story of the early solar system are made by Citizen Scientist volunteers examining these haystacks of data. As astronomy continues to evolve and data haystacks grow\, the view from Mount Graham reveals the fundamentally human practice of looking up.

SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Flagstaff |Antarctica: Conducting Science at the End of the World
DESCRIPTION:Join Lowell Observatory and Mother Road Brewing Co. on June 23rd at 6:30pm for Astronomy on Tap! Listen to fascinating science talks\, play trivia to win out-of-this-world prizes\, and of course\, enjoy Mother Road brews on tap. Come early\, seats fill up fast! \n  \nThis month’s speaker is Gavin Moriarty is a second-year PhD student in Astronomy & Planetary Science at Northern Arizona University\, and is also a presentation specialist at Lowell Observatory. Gavin will be talking about research he did in Antarctica this past year and talking about how the cold\, harsh climate of Antarctica pushes Earth’s ability to sustain life to the limit\, but that doesn’t stop a small portion of microbial life from calling it home. As an Antarctic researcher\, he uses remote sensing techniques to study the McMurdo Dry Valleys and to constrain the environmental characteristics that support life\, in hopes of improving techniques for searching for life in the universe. Experience the journey and harsh conditions that scientists endure to conduct fieldwork on the frozen continent.
