SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Hawai'i: Nāpōwawā`enakaulua
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, October 14th from 7–9 pm at Hale Kanikapila for a night of casual astronomy! This month\, we’re diving into Nāpōwawā`enakaulua: the story of a supermassive black hole twin at the edge of the Universe. Silvia Onorato and Devin Chu will share the recent scientific discovery\, along with the Hawaiian naming and its cultural relevance. Come hang out\, learn something new\, and test your knowledge in our quiz for a chance to win prizes! Everyone is welcome\, no astronomy background needed. \nSilvia Onorato – The scientific discovery from Maunakea and space telescopes \nWhat’s better than a supermassive black hole swallowing matter at the dawn of the Universe? Two of them\, side by side! Silvia Onorato from the Gemini North Observatory will guide you through the exploration of a rare black hole twin system observed when the cosmos was less than a billion years old. \nSilvia was born and raised in Sicily\, in Southern Italy. Passionate about science\, she is now a postdoc at the Gemini Observatory working to understand the early Universe through supermassive black holes. She received her Master’s degree in Astrophysics and Cosmology from the University of Bologna (Italy) in 2021 and completed her Ph.D. at Leiden Observatory (the Netherlands) in 2025. Besides science\, she is very passionate about traveling\, paddling (go Puna!)\, skiing\, volleyball\, music\, and books. \nDevin Chu – The Hawaiian naming and cultural relevance \nGiven the relevance of Maunakea in this discovery\, through the A Hua He Inoa program at `Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai’i\, the following name was given to the double quasar system: Nāpōwawā`enakaulua. This translates to “Two celestial bodies of fathomless powerful darkness (black holes) in the brilliance of heat reincarnating energy into the Universe” in the indigenous Hawaiian language\, ‘ōlelo. Devin Chu from `Imiloa will describe how the name was given by Larry Kimura\, professor of Hawaiian Language and Hawaiian Studies at Ka Haka ʻUla O Keʻelikōlani/College of Hawaiian Language. \nDevin Chu was raised in Hilo\, Hawaiʻi – a community situated down the slopes of Maunakea\, Hawaiʻi Island. His relationship with the astronomy community played a large role in inspiring him to become an astronomer. Devin attended Dartmouth College and received his Bachelor’s degree in Physics and Astronomy. Devin then attended the University of California\, Los Angeles and received his PhD in Astronomy and Astrophysics under the supervision of Professor Andrea Ghez and Professor Tuan Do. Devin’s research interests include studying stars orbiting the Milky Way Galaxy’s central supermassive black hole using spectroscopy with adaptive optics to better understand the stellar dynamics and populations of the region. Devin has since returned to his hometown of Hilo with his young family and serves as the Astronomer in Residence at the ʻImiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaiʻi. Devin has been involved with the A Hua He Inoa program\, a collaborative effort led by ʻImiloa\, which is shifting global paradigms\, positioning Hawai‘i as the first place in the world to weave traditional indigenous practices into the process of officially naming astronomical discoveries.

SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Hawai'i: September 9th\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Astronomy on Tap Hawaiʻi is back on Wednesday\, September 9th from 7–9 pm at Hale Kanikapila! Join us for a night of astronomy\, drinks\, trivia\, and prizes with two incredible speakers. \nRena Lee (University of Hawaiʻi) presents “Exploring Extreme Earths\,” a deep dive into ultra-short-period planets. Ultra-short-period planets (USPs) are Earth-sized planets with orbital periods less than a single day. This makes for some extreme surface temperatures and surface environments in these hellish worlds. Since true Earth analogs on yearly orbits are still difficult to find with our leading technologies\, USPs are our best bet for probing terrestrial planet compositions\, formation pathways\, and evolution. Using state-of-the-art instrumentation atop MaunaKea\, Rena and team have discovered several USP systems that provide key insights into the origins of our own planet. \nPeter Michaud recently retired after 27 years as Education and Engagement Manager at NSF’s NOIRLab/Gemini\, but still leads public tours of the Gemini Observatory. He’s traveled the world to witness 7 total solar eclipses so far\, with #8 planned for the Mediterranean in August 2027. In his talk\, Peter will share his passion for eclipses: they show up everywhere\, from music and art to the discovery of planetary systems beyond our own solar system. Yet few people understand the different types of eclipses\, or why some travelers become fanatical about chasing rare total solar eclipses. Come learn how you can become an “eclipseophile” and travel the world to bask in the shadow of the moon!

SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Hawai'i: August 12th
DESCRIPTION:We’re back at Hale Kanikapila on August 12th\, 7–9 pm\, for another night of Astronomy on Tap Hawai’i! Join us for talks from astronomers Branden Allen and Thales Gutke\, test your knowledge in the quiz (prizes included\, of course)\, and enjoy pupus and drinks from Hale K. \nBranden Allen: Building the Tools of Exploration\, A Preview of the Spaceflight Programs of the UH Space Science and Engineering Initiative. \nI will introduce the University of Hawai’i Space Science and Engineering Initiative (SSEI)\, our research programs aimed at expanding Hawai’i involvement and leadership in spaceflight programs\, and the pre-engineering program: a partnership between UH Hilo and UH Manoa designed to expand education and research opportunities to underserved areas within the state. \nDr. Branden Allen is a Professor of Engineering at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa who serves as the program lead for the Space Science and Engineering Initiative (SSEI)\, a multi-island interdisciplinary research center that aims to expand education and research opportunities throughout the state of Hawai’i. He is an Astronomer and Planetary Scientist who has spent the bulk of his career at the intersection of detector and telescope development; aerospace and electrical engineering; and the space sciences. \nThales Gutke: Do we live in a simulation? Probably not in mine. \nFrom spectacular movies of galaxies forming to viral questions like “Are there people living inside the simulation?”\, cosmological simulations capture the imagination. But what are they actually simulating? Join us for a behind-the-scenes look at how I create virtual universes—and why leaving things out is the key to understanding the real one. \nThales Gutcke is a computational astrophysicist at the University of Hawaiʻi and used to hold a NASA fellowship at Princeton. Her research uses state-of-the-art simulations to explore how galaxies form\, how the first stars shaped the Universe\, and what dark matter really is. When she’s not building virtual universes\, she paddles for Puna Canoe Club and takes care of her almost 2-year-old.

SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Hawai'i - 2nd Oct 2025
DESCRIPTION:Come join us again at Hilo Town Tavern on October 2nd\, 7-9 pm for another event of Astronomy on Tap Hawai’i! We are joined this event by Leilehua Yuen and Jayke Nguyen\, who will tell us about stories in the stars and UFOs and aliens. This event is completely free and open to everyone. There will be a new trivia game with prizes to win! \nStories in the Stars – Leilehua Yuen \nIn Hawaiian culture\, the sky is our compass\, map\, calendar\, and clock. It also is a vast book\, with illustrations that scroll by high above us each night. An award-winning storyteller\, Leilehua Yuen will share some we can see in the night sky of this month\, ʻIkuwā. \nUFOs\, Aliens\, and Our Biased Human Perspective – Jayke Nguyen \nHumans frequently encounter surprising and unexplainable phenomena\, often labeled as UFOs. How do we prove that these phenomena are truly alien in origin? Before we draw conclusions\, we must first examine our own perspective and disentangle our own biases to separate science fiction from reality. In this talk\, I’ll discuss my view as an astrophysicist on UFOs and credible UFO evidence.

SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Hawai'i - September 4th\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce the speakers for our Astronomy on Tap event next week Thursday\, September 4th\, 7-9 pm at Hilo Town Tavern. Come join us for a fun night of astronomy talks and games! \nThe Joys of Amateur Astronomy \nAmateur astronomy is a hobby with something for everyone. From simple stargazing to making telescopes and astrophotography\, there has never been a more exciting time to enjoy astronomy as an amateur. New technologies are making the hobby more amazing every day and in this talk Peter will share many of the options for engaging in the Universe with your own eyes and brain! \nPeter Michaud recently retired after 27 years as the Education and Engagement manager at NSF’s NOIRLab/Gemini but continues to conduct public tours of the Gemini Observatory. In his retirement\, he continues to pursue his passion for astronomy as an amateur stargazer\, telescope maker\, and astrophotographer. Peter also loves bicycling\, tinkering with\, and building audio equipment\, and inventing mostly useless things! \nSeeing the Skies with Radio Eyes \nWhat if we could “see” in radio waves\, an entirely different Universe would appear! In this talk\, we’ll tune our “radio eyes” to the sky and explore how astronomers use giant dish antennas to listen in on the hidden universe. From microwaves to pigeon poop\, there is a lot of history behind some of the greatest astronomical discoveries of our time. Besides these stories\, I will also share my own quest of hunting for monster radio jets in the early Universe. \nAnniek Gloudemans is a research fellow at Gemini North Observatory working on understanding the formation and evolution of the most massive supermassive black holes in the early Universe. She obtained her PhD at Leiden Observatory in the Netherlands in 2023 and moved to Hilo soon after. Anniek has a passion for teaching and organizing outreach activities for all ages with a focus on connecting the world through astronomy and raising awareness for climate change.

SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Hawai'i - 7th August 2025
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for Astronomy on Tap on Thursday\, August 7th from 7–9 pm at Hilo Town Tavern! This month\, we’re joined by Subaru Telescope astronomers Ian Padgett and Kumiko Usuda-Sato for an evening of cosmic insights\, fun games\, food & drinks\, and lively conversation. \nIan Padgett:\nMauna Kea gives us one of the most unique views of our night sky and the world. I have had the honor and privilege to work and live on Mauna Kea. It is my goal to be able to share this experience and give you a view into our night sky. In my talk\, I will explain a little of what I do as a night operator for Subaru telescope\, show the specular sights that I have been able to capture\, and give some context to what we are actually looking at when we peer up at our home in the cosmos. \nIan Padgett is the Night Operator at the Subaru Telescope on Mauna Kea. His journey into astronomy began at 14\, when he first glimpsed Saturn’s rings through a small backyard telescope\, the moment that started his journey to where he is today. In 2019\, he\nmoved to Hawaiʻi to study astrophysics at UH Mānoa. There he worked on research in cosmology\, focusing on strong gravitational lenses and the evolution of large galaxy structures. A visit to Mauna Kea during his undergraduate years inspired him to pursue\nworking atop with the observatories. Now\, working with a telescope a bit larger than the 11” one he started with\, he is passionate about sharing the wonder of the night sky with\nothers. Coming from a family of artist’s\, Ian’s chosen art is his photography where he captures his views from his journey\, most recently the night sky from Mauna Kea. \nKumiko Usuda-Sato:\nTanabata is a Japanese star festival based on a legend about the annual reunion of two star-crossed lovers – a weaving princess named Orihime and a cowherd named Hikoboshi. They are separated on opposite sides of Amanogawa\, the heavenly river (Milky Way). In my talk\, I will present the Tanabata legend\, including an announcement of the Maunakea\nObservatories Tanabata Block Party on Saturday\, August 30. I also connect the Amanogawa river\, a fuzzy light band in night skies\, with the Milky Way Galaxy\, our own galaxy. \nKumiko Usuda-Sato is a Japanese astronomer. From 1998 to 2013\, she had lived in Hilo on the Big Island of Hawai‘i and had extensive outreach activities at Subaru Telescope. After working at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) in Tokyo\, Japan\, for eight years\, she returned to Hilo in late August 2021 to work at Subaru Telescope as a public outreach specialist. She is a project coordinator of GALAXY CRUISE\, NAOJ’s citizen science project\, and engages the general public to classify many galaxies captured by the Subaru Telescope. She also enjoys “touching” the Universe with blind and visually impaired (BVI) people using tactile models of the Subaru Telescope and celestial bodies created with\na 3D printer. One of her leading projects in the local community is the annual Maunakea Coin Contest by the Maunakea Observatories for K-12 students on the Big Island. \n

SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Hawai'i 3 July 2025
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Astronomy on Tap on Thursday\, July 3rd from 7–9 pm at Hilo Town Tavern! Enjoy an evening of stellar talks by Trinity Parascandola and Suzanne Zhang\, plus games\, drinks\, and plenty of time for conversation. \nTrinity Parascandola \nWhat do ancient Polynesian voyagers and future astronauts have in common? The answer might be sweet potatoes and taro. As NASA prepares to return humans to the Moon through its Artemis missions\, scientists and students are exploring how to grow food in space to support long-term lunar living. At the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo\, a student team called the Lunar Vulcans is working to grow traditional Hawaiian canoe plants\, like ʻuala (sweet potato) and kalo (taro)\, in a volcanic medium that’s similar to what you’d find on the Moon. These plants\, once carried across vast oceans in canoes\, are now being studied for their resilience and potential to thrive beyond Earth. The team is designing a specialized lunar growth chamber as part of this innovative project\, and has participated in the NASA MINDS competition. Could these hardy Hawaiian crops help feed the first moon settlers in over 50 years? \nTrinity Parascandola recently graduated from the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo with a degree in Astronomy and Physics. During her time as a student\, she engaged in several research projects\, including analyzing lunar soil spectra from the Apollo missions and contributing to the Lunar Vulcans team\, where she rose to the role of team lead. Trinity is passionate about cultural astronomy and has spent over two years working at the ʻImiloa Astronomy Center as a Planetarium Operator\, where she shares her knowledge of astronomy and wayfinding with the public and local schools. She also recently joined the operations team at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) through the East Asian Observatory. \nSuzanne Zhang \nHave you ever looked up at the night sky and wondered why the stars twinkle? The famous painting by Vincent van Gogh\, The Starry Night\, explains why it is. The Earth’s atmosphere consists of pockets of air with different temperatures and thus different index of refraction. It distorts the incoming starlight and bends the light in different directions dynamically\, making the stars look as if they are blinking at you. Despite how pretty it is seen by our naked eye\, the twinkling makes astronomical observations more difficult. Therefore\, we use a technique called adaptive optics (AO) to negate the effect of the atmosphere to obtain better image resolution in astronomical observations. This presentation will offer a detailed explanation of how AO works. \nSuzanne Zhang is a 5th year PhD student at the Institute for Astronomy\, University of Hawaii at Manoa. Her primary research is in astronomical instrumentation\, specifically adaptive optics. She works with Mark Chun on developing a new generation of adaptive secondary mirrors\, and with Christoph Baranec on a robotic and self-driving adaptive optics system called Robo-AO-2.

SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Hawai'i: March 6th
DESCRIPTION:Join us on March 6th\, 7 pm at Hilo Town Tavern for Astronomy on Tap Hawai’i! We will have two amazing speakers\, Bo Reipurth and Peter Michaud\, and the trivia will be back. Come join us and enjoy a casual night of astronomy and drinks! \nBo Reipurth is Emeritus Astronomer at the Institute for Astronomy and has a life-long passion for studying baby-stars with all sorts of telescopes in Hawaii and around the world. \nThe Birth of Stars and Planets: When we look at the stars they seem unchangeable. And indeed they are when viewed on a human timescale. But on timescales measured in millions or billions of years\, stars live dramatic lives. I will tell what we today know about the birth of stars similar to our Sun thanks to large telescopes like those on Maunakea. And with star-birth comes planet-birth and a growing understanding of how the more than 5000 planets so far discovered around other stars came to be. \nPeter Michaud is the Education and Engagement manager for NSF’s NOIRLab and works out of the Gemini Observatory’s Hilo Base Facility on Hawai‘i Island with a passion for science education and inspiring students to pursue STEM careers \nAstronomical Light and Magic: There is much more to collecting and studying starlight than meets the eye. In this presentation\, Gemini Observatory’s Peter Michaud will enlighten audiences with some of the remarkable ways that astronomers wrangle starlight to get the most out of the signals that have traveled across the Universe to our telescopes.

SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Hawai'i: Journey Through the Universe special
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for another Astronomy on Tap event on Thursday\, February 6th (7-9 pm) at Hilo Town Tavern! We have a special event this month to celebrate the Journey Through the Universe educational program. Our three speakers are coming to the Big Island to engage with our keiki and you at Astronomy on Tap! It will be a fun night filled with interactive astronomy activities and prizes to win. \nJacelle Ramon-Sauberan: Cultural Sharing: Astronomy through Tohono O’odham Storytelling. \nTohono O’odham storytelling is an oral tradition that weaves together the Himdag (way of life) for those who call the Sonoran Desert home. These stories\, passed down through generations\, are a living archive of wisdom\, offering lessons about nature\, humanity\, and the interconnectedness of all life. Whether told around a fire or at communal gatherings\, storytelling is a vital way of preserving identity\, fostering community\, and sharing cultures. Join Jacelle as she shares stories about the night sky through storytelling. \nPuragra Guhathakurta: Complex Life on Earth and Dark Matter in the Milky Way Galaxy \nThere is a beautiful connection between the development and existence of complex life here on Earth and the fact that we (our planet/planetary system and star) are embedded within a large dark matter rich galaxy. Chemistry would be an easy subject if we didn’t live in a galaxy like the Milky Way\, but we wouldn’t be around to study it! I will also touch upon the lives and times of galaxies. \nJocelyn Ferrara: Telescope Dating Game \nValentine’s Day is coming up – are you looking for love\, or data\, in all the wrong places? There are plenty of telescopes around the world that may speak your love language. Let’s find your perfect match and explore the different strengths and differences of various observatories!
