The image shown is of the Butterfly Nebula (NGC 6302) planetary nebula, taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. Planetary nebula (contrary to what one might assume) are explanding shells of hot gas ejected from giant stars when they reach the end of their lives. In other words: dead star guts.
