Astronomy on Tap Taipei: A Clockwork Star

A CLOCKWORK STAR

The lives of the most massive stars in our Universe are short, and end with one of nature’s most energetic phenomena — cataclysmic events known as supernovae. These spectacular explosions are bright enough to outshine entire galaxies and, despite their potential for destruction on an incredible scale, are also extremely important; in the final few seconds of these stars’ lives, they produce the heaviest elements in our Universe, and their titanic explosions carry these elements across the galaxy to be deposited in the clouds of gas and dust which eventually condense to form stars and planets. Remarkably, we encounter the product of supernovae explosions on a daily basis.

And what’s left after these colossal explosions? In many cases, what remains is a neutron star — the simmering remains of the stellar core, unimaginably dense and spinning hundreds of times every second. These rapidly spinning objects are called pulsars, and provide key insights to researchers working to understand a wide array of astronomical phenomena.

At 𝘼 𝘾𝙇𝙊𝘾𝙆𝙒𝙊𝙍𝙆 𝙎𝙏𝘼𝙍, we’ll be talking about the fiery deaths and strange afterlives of these stellar behemoths. Featuring talks by Po-Sheng Ou (PhD candidate, National Taiwan University Graduate Institute of Astrophysics) and Dr. Sujin Eie (postdoctoral fellow, Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy & Astrophysics)

𝘼𝙎𝙏𝙍𝙊𝙉𝙊𝙈𝙔 𝙊𝙉 𝙏𝘼𝙋 𝙏𝘼𝙄𝙋𝙀𝙄 is hosted by astronomers 𝗝𝗼𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹, 𝗟𝗮𝗽𝗼 𝗙𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗼, 𝗣𝗼-𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝘂, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘆.

We’re part of the global AoT network, engaging and entertaining audiences where they already are — at the bar!
Each event features:

– SHORT EDUCATIONAL TALKS geared towards a non-expert audience, and
