AoT Köln: Online Event #13, 7 October 2021

October 7, 2021 @ 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM CEST

Our October event will feature Dr. Arshia Jacob explaining how small molecules can have a very large effect. Dr. Jacob is now a post doctoral researcher at Johns Hopkins University, though she completed her PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Radioastronomy in Bonn where she analysed the impact of hydrides in astrochemistry. We will be live on YouTube at 19:00 CEST on Thursday, 7 October 2021. Join us live to participate in a lively discussion! 🙂

Title: Unveiling the mysteries of the chemical universe using small molecules

Summary: Stars cannot form without molecules, and most molecules cannot form without stars. Taking advantage of this interdependence, astronomers study the (often) extreme conditions of interstellar space using observations of atoms and molecules whose chemical signatures when modeled, reveal the physical and chemical properties of that region. I will talk about the diagnostic properties of small molecules namely, hydrides and their diagnostic properties and hope to, by the end of it, have convinced you of the big impact that these small molecules have.
