AoT Leiden (on Zoom): The Milky Way & Nearby Galaxies!

January 31, 2022 @ 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM CET

Our first event of the year will take place on Monday 31 January at 20:00 CET on ZOOM! That’s right, you will have the opportunity to join us directly on the Zoom call and participate in the discussions and games. This month, Ashley Bemis and Ian Roberts will tell us all about the Milky Way and nearby galaxies.

Register at https://aotleiden.eventbrite.nl

The Zoom link will be distributed to registered participants before the event.

Ashley Bemis: “Star Formation in the Milky Way and Extragalactic Neighbors”

Ashley is a postdoctoral researcher at Leiden Observatory and a support scientist in the ALMA Local Expertise Group (ALLEGRO). Using data from radio telescopes, such as ALMA, Ashley studies how stars form from dense gas clouds in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies. In particular, her work aims to bridge these two perspectives of star formation. In her talk, she will present observations of dense gas and star formation in nearby galaxies and will compare these with what is seen in the Milky Way. In her talk, she will describe how astronomers connect these two perspectives through our current understanding of star formation.

Ian Roberts : “Fishing for Jellyfish in Nearby Galaxy Clusters”

Ian is a postdoctoral researcher at the Leiden Observatory. His work focuses on galaxies found inside of large galaxy clusters, with an emphasis on how the galaxy cluster environment impacts the properties of galaxies within. In this talk Ian will introduce a peculiar type of galaxy, so-called “jellyfish galaxies”, that show trails of gas extending far beyond the galaxy disk. This talk will explain how these strange objects aid in our understanding of the “life-cycle”, and the ultimate death, of galaxies in clusters.

Important information: Entry is free but registration is required! Once registered, we will send you the Zoom link where you can join us directly in the call. You do not need a Zoom account to join. Participants will be muted and their cameras will be turned off upon arrival on Zoom. During the question & answer period, you will have the opportunity to turn on your microphone (and camera if you’d like) to ask your question directly to the speakers and join the discussion and games. Alternatively, you will also have the option to put your question in the chat and we can ask them on your behalf. The event will also be streaming on YouTube, but we strongly encourage you to join us on Zoom for a more lively discussion and to participate in the games. All ages and backgrounds welcome!

We start at 20:00 sharp, so grab a drink, get comfortable, and join us for an evening of astronomy and fun games where you could win cool science prizes!
