Speaker Bios:
Speaker: Balick joined the UW Astronomy Department in 1975 (shortly after discovering the black hole at the center of the Milky Way). Subsequently he served as its chair, became active in faculty governance, and participated in the design of new instrumentation for Hubble. Since his retirement in 2014 Balick continues to publish research papers using data from the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes. Most of his recent research has been on the fanciful nebulae created in the final flings of ordinary stars just before their deaths.
