Astronomy on Copenhagen: Planet Formation
September 9, 2023 @ 6:30 PM - 10:00 PM CEST
Chances are high you have heard about planets at some point in your life. Be it our Earth and the planets in the Solar System or the over 5000 Exoplanets that we have discovered so far. But have you ever wondered where these planets come from? If the answer is yes you should join at this months edition of Astronomy on Tap and hear all about planet formation!
Our speakers are:
Marie-Luise Steinmeyer: Compared to some other fields in Astronomy, the study of planet formation is still quite new dating back to only the 1970s. Still we have made giant leaps forward in understanding how tiny dust grains to gas giants like Jupiter. Even more exciting we can now observe planet formation in action around other stars!
Rick Verberne: He will present an overview of the characterization of terrestrial and extraterrestrial material at the atomic scale and a brief introduction of various analytical techniques that are used. He will show how different samples like chondrules, presolar grains or even just rock samples from Earth can be used to investigate planet formation at the near-atomic scale.
18:30: Doors open to the STARDUST Room
19:00: Marie-Luise Steinmeyer – The where and how of planet formation
19:30: Quiz and break
20:00: Rick Verberne – A nanoscale vision of planetary building blocks
Quiz! Join the half time quiz for a chance to win some drinks vouchers and test your knowledge.
Astronomy on Tap is a (FREE) series of events aimed at making the latest research in astronomy and space accessible to the public, with fun talks given in simple ENGLISH, and quiz, and plenty of time for mingling between our speakers and guests.
