Astronomy on Tap Hawai’i – September 5th

September 5 @ 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM EDT

Come join us for another Astro on Tap at Hilo Town Tavern on September 5th at 7 pm! ✨🔭 There will be 2 talks, astro news, and a quiz with prizes. Everyone is welcome at this casual and free event!
Gemini Observatory’s Education and Engagement Manager Peter Michaud has studied and watched the skies since he was a teenager. His background provides a unique perspective on the interaction between astronomy and meteorology. In his talk, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star: The Atmosphere and Maunakea, Peter highlights the amazing weather phenomenon on Maunakea, from the extremes of 150+ mph winds, to the tranquility of skywatching from Hawaii’s highest peak. Join Peter as he shares his passion for weather, astronomy, and even some of the technology that scientists use to study the sky above – from local weather to distant nebulae and galaxies.
Emily Peavy, is a professional astronomy nerd. Emily has loved space so much as a teenager that she decided that she wanted to be an astrophysicist, then she realized that she mostly loved just talking about astronomy and sharing the wonders of the universe. As an astronomy educator she thinks about the best way to bring the science down to Earth and make it easier to understand and connect to. In her talk, Emily will tell us the tale of Maui’s Fishhook, called Manaiakalani.
