Astronomy on Tap in the Triangle: Artificial Intelligence & the Search for Rare Events

Come check out Astronomy on Tap Triangle, our North Carolina chapter of short and engaging talks about astronomy over beer. You will find us in the taproom of Durty Bull Brewing Company in Durham, NC from 7-8:30 PM on Wednesday, February 12th!
Choosing the next star you look at is becoming more and more like choosing the next movie that you will watch on Netflix. Join us as Jon Carney (UNC-CH) explains the use of artificial intelligence to search for astrophysical needles in the haystack of big data. First, we’ll get a crash course on how AI models are built. Then, we’ll see how these AI models are used in practice by diving into the recent discovery of a star being torn apart by a black hole.
Don’t forget to get there on time for a quick round of astronomy trivia and special prizes!
There is always lots of time to ask questions and interact with the presenters and other scientists who inevitably stick around for the beer. We can’t wait to see you there!
