Astronomy on Tap Leiden: A Dance of Stars!
May 22 @ 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM CEST
Our next event will take place on Monday 22 May at Grandcafé de Burcht (Burgsteeg 14, 2312 JS Leiden) at 20:00 CEST!
Join us for a night of astronomy with two fantastic talks from Zephyr Penoyre and Floris Kummer, who will talk to us about binary stars, how we identify them, how we classify them, and beyond. As always, there will be fun games where you could win cool science prizes!
Zephyr Penoyre: “Binarity and Non-Binarity”
Zephyr (they/any) is a postdoctoral researcher in stellar dynamics at Leiden Observatory, and a climate activist working with scientist rebellion and numerous other groups. They study the collapse of complex systems, the galactic center, and methods of detection for stellar multiples, particularly through astrometry (the motion of stars across the sky). They will be talking about how to spot and classify binary stars, and what binarity really means (and if it makes sense to apply it to stars!)
Floris Kummer: “The Dance of Stars: Multi-Star Systems”
Floris Kummer is a PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam. As a passionate science fiction lover he has always had a natural affinity with space. The goal of his research is to create a general understanding of the fate of triple stars by means of computer simulations. He will be talking about stellar multiplicity, and exploring the dynamics of systems of two (or more!) stars.
Logistical information: We start at 20:00 sharp, so please arrive earlier to enter the bar, save a seat, and grab a drink. We are not planning to stream the event live, but will be uploading a recording of the talks on our YouTube channel after the event.
