Exoplanets are what we call the planets that we find around other stars within our own Milky Way galaxy. Meanwhile, quasars are the name we give to certain young galaxies, found at vast distances from us, where a supermassive black hole sits at its core, feeding voraciously and spewing out enormous amounts of energy. So what do exoplanets and quasars have to do with each other? We were asking ourselves the same question! We were trying to… connect the dots (see what we did there?).
But as astronomers we’re always trying to connect the dots! The Universe gives us precious little information to go on — just some photons streaming to us across the light years — and we have to solve the mysteries of the Universe with just these few precious clues. And sometimes the object we’re studying is just a single point of light on the sky (it’s like… a dot), and yet by looking at these little dots on the sky we have now found thousands of worlds, and millions of quasars, in the depths of space.
At ๐พ๐๐๐๐๐พ๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ฟ๐๐๐: ๐๐ญ๐ค๐ฅ๐ก๐๐ฃ๐๐ฉ๐จ ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ช๐๐จ๐๐ง๐จ, we’ll be hearing from Dr. Travis Thieme (ASIAA) about some of the exotic ways astronomers go about finding distant exoplanets, and Dr. Klod Vijarnwannaluk (ASIAA) about the violent processes surrounding the centers of these active galaxies, so powerful that they can even stop stars from forming.
