Astronomy on Tap Taipei: Falling Skies: Clouds, Comets and Asteroids

The raw materials of star systems are out there, waiting patiently for their cue. It doesn’t take much… just a little nudge, and these clouds of gas and dust will start to collapse under their own weight. It won’t be long — on a cosmic timescale — before stars and planets are forged out of these materials. But there are always leftovers! And we see them today in our Solar System — the asteroids and the comets are the last remnants of our turbulent infancy, when the microscopic grains and clouds of gas gave way to giant snowballs and collosal boulders, smashing together to form, or sometimes pulverize, the baby planets.
At ππΌπππππ πππππ: πΎπ‘π€πͺππ¨ πΎπ€π’ππ©π¨ & πΌπ¨π©ππ§π€πππ¨, we’ll be hearing from Raffaele Rani (NTNU) about those giant molecular clouds where it all starts, and from Yu-Chi Cheng (NTNU) about the asteroids and comets of our Solar System that still bear traces of our ancient past!
