Light never breaks the speed limit, but it loves to bend the rules. Those rules that say things like, “always travel in a straight line.” Complete rubbish! Things get a little crazy when light gets bent, but honestly, we’re here for it. Whether it’s passing through a cloud of interstellar dust, or through Earth’s atmosphere, or through the gravitational field of a distant planet, or a galaxy cluster(!)… the light we receive here on Earth may have taken a strange, exotic journey, and understanding that journey is key to unlocking some of the Universe’s most astonishing secrets.

At 𝙇𝙀𝙉𝙎 𝙄𝙉 𝙃𝙄𝙂𝙃 𝙋𝙇𝘼𝘾𝙀𝙎, we’ll be talking about the wild ride some photons take on their way to our eyes and our telescopes, and what we learn about the Universe by studying these phenomena. Featuring talks by Dr. Daniel Baker (‘Scintillating Science and Naturally Occurring Telescopes’) and Yu-Hsiu Huang (“Einstein’s Lens”).

𝘼𝙎𝙏𝙍𝙊𝙉𝙊𝙈𝙔 𝙊𝙉 𝙏𝘼𝙋 𝙏𝘼𝙄𝙋𝙀𝙄 is hosted by astronomers 𝗝𝗼𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹, 𝗟𝗮𝗽𝗼 𝗙𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗼, 𝗣𝗼-𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝘂, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘆. We’re part of the global AoT network, engaging and entertaining audiences where they already are — at the bar!
