Every now and then, an astronomer in the course of their work has the good fortune of spotting something so unusual, so peculiar, they simply have to start investigating it immediately. These are the rare events that sometimes lead to breakthrough science, and maybe even a bit of notoriety for the discoverer. These explorations may open up even more fascinating questions… but just as often they end in a disappointingly mundane answer and a somewhat wiser scientist.
In celebration of August’s rare blue moon (two full moons in one calendar month), at ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ ๐น๐๐๐ผ ๐๐๐โ we’ll hear from two scientists who are investigating some truly exceptional objects in our galaxy, to build a deeper understanding of the formation and evolution of these rare systems. Featuring talks by Dr. Gilles Otten and Dr. Mayank Narang (both astronomers at Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy & Astrophysics).
