Where once there was merely the voice and the pen, suddenly there was light to carry messages. At the dawn of humanity’s technological revolution, we learned how to encode light waves with information, and today, our modern world relies on communications made through radio transmissions and fiberoptic cables. Sometimes these communications can even be harnessed for purposes other than their intended use, with spectacular results.
And when it comes to looking for extraterrestrial intelligence, we will look for these same signals — radio waves, and maybe even optical transmissions. Maybe the signals we detect out there will be deliberately sent to us, or just maybe, we will see the incidental leaks of their internal communications. In so doing, we will have once again managed to use signals meant for one thing to show us something else truly amazing.
