Astronomy on Tap Triangle – Spicy Rocks and Spinning Clocks
November 2, 2022 @ 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM EDT
Come check out Astronomy on Tap Triangle, our North Carolina chapter of short and engaging talks about astronomy over beer. Find us in the taproom of Fullsteam Brewery in Durham, NC from 7-9 PM on Wednesday, November 2nd!
Are you a fan of the hit TV show Dancing with the Stars?! While we won’t have any celebrities and we (probably) won’t be doing any dancing, we’ll be talking about stars!
First up, Kelsey Lund (NC State) will be telling us about all the ways that stars create precious metals and “spicy rocks” during their violent deaths. It is sure to be an explosive talk!
Then, our very own Jonathan Bush (UNC-CH) will teach us what we can learn from the spins (or dare I say… dances) of stars. To study planetary evolution, we piece together a timeline of exoplanets discovered across a range of ages. We need precise age estimates of young exoplanets to draw informed conclusions, but quality age estimates are hard to come by. Could stellar rotation measurements improve exoplanet age estimates?
Be sure to get there on time for a quick round of astronomy trivia and prizes! We’ll also have some telescopes out front for you to check out if the weather cooperates.
There is always lots of time to ask questions and interact with the presenters and other scientists who inevitably stick around for the beer. We can’t wait to see you there!
