Astronomy On Tap West LA
October 27, 2021 @ 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM PDT
Join us for a virtual event at 7:00 p.m. PT, 27th October 2021, live streamed onto YouTube at this link, which will feature talks by Professor Smadar Naoz and Rory Bentley from UCLA.
Gravitational Waves at the Heart of Galaxies: Gravitational-wave emissions are small ripples in the fabric of spacetime that are emitted when two masses accelerate toward each other. Recently, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) transformed the way we sense our Universe by detecting gravitational-wave emission from two colliding black holes, raising many questions about how black holes meet. Smadar Naoz will be discussing how black holes collide in the context of the recent detections.
The Lives of Stars, and How You’re Made of Starstuff: At first glance, the stars that straddle the night sky seem constant and timeless. However, stars evolve through their own lifecycles over tens of millions of years, which science has shown to be crucially important to the evolution of our universe. Rory Bentley will be talking about the different ways stars live out their lives, how they are responsible for the world we live in today, and how they will determine the fate of own solar system!
