The James Webb Space Telescope offers new ways to probe the interstellar medium, the gas and dust between the stars out of which new stars and planets form. The various instruments on JWST probe the gas and dust in ways never before available to astronomers. Beyond pretty pictures, JWST provides a host of information about star formation and the deaths of stars (which return material to the interstellar medium).
