THE RAINBOW CONNECTION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Most of the information we have about the Universe comes to us in the form of electromagnetic radiation — more commonly referred to as light! We can learn so much from the light we receive by analyzing (for example) the color of the light, the patterns imprinted in a spectrum, and the changes we see in that light over time. Sometimes an object that appears to us in the telescope as a single star is actually two stars orbiting each other in a binary system, and the way we know this is by seeing two stellar spectra, or a peculiar color, or blueshifts and redshifts in the spectrum. And as we look out to much greater distances, far beyond the Milky Way galaxy, we may see light from exceedingly distant objects passing through clouds of gas and dust at an intermediate distance, allowing us to understand the composition of those clouds.
At ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ค๐ฌ ๐พ๐ค๐ฃ๐ฃ๐๐๐ฉ๐๐ค๐ฃ, we’ll talking about some of the incredible things light has revealed about our Universe.
Featuring talks by ASIAA postdocs Dr. Jeremy Smallwood (“The Odd Couple: How Binary Stars Shape the Formation of Planets”) and Dr. Adarsh Ranjan (“What we cannot see… the story of the absorber and the astronomer”).
