Astronomy on Tap Champaign-Urbana: December 9, 2021

December 9, 2021 @ 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM EST

Join us IN-PERSON at 6pm next Thursday, 12/09 for this month’s Astronomy on Tap at the Literary Bookstore and Bar! We will have two talks by University of Illinois graduate students Sreevani Jarugula and Alex Gagliano:

“Water beyond the Milky Way!” with Sreevani Jarugula Come find out about water and other molecules in galaxies outside Milky Way. Sreevani will talk about how scientists study galaxies using powerful telescopes and what information we can get by observing dust and molecules like water.

“The Stargazing Machine: Building Software to Study Cosmic Explosions (and End World Hunger)” with Alex Gagliano Throw away your floppy disks and hop on your hoverboards, because the future is here! In this talk, Alex will present the ways that machine learning is revolutionizing our world. He will explain how, by uncovering subtle trends often missed by humans, the same algorithms can be used to study exploding stars and blooming flowers.

Sreevani is a seventh year graduate student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She mainly uses radio telescopes and modeling techniques to understand how galaxies form and evolve over time. Alex Gagliano is a fourth year NSF Fellow at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, building software to rapidly identify and uncover the physics of interesting explosions found by upcoming observatories.

Grab a drink, bring your friends and family, and let’s have some fun while we learn! We hope to see you there!
