Astronomy on Tap in the Triangle: NASA Missions
April 5 @ 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM EDT
Come check out Astronomy on Tap Triangle, our North Carolina chapter of short and engaging talks about astronomy over beer. Find us in the taproom of Fullsteam Brewery in Durham, NC from 7-9 PM on Wednesday, April 5th!
For the first time in over 50 years, humanity is going to set foot on the Moon – sending the first woman and first person of color to the lunar surface. Join us as Nick Eakes, NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador and Astronomy Educator from Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, discusses Artemis – NASA’s new lunar exploration program. Through the Artemis missions, NASA will implement new technology to study our closest neighbor in new and better ways, with the ultimate goal of preparing for future human missions to Mars!
Then, UNC professor and Space Telescope Science Institute scientist, Dr. Greg Sloan, will clue us in on the famous James Webb Space Telescope. JWST is now sending back images and spectra that promise to revolutionize our understanding of the Universe. Join us to learn a little bit about how we got here and where we’re going. Dr. Greg Sloan will give us an inside perspective of the last year and a half as a member of the team supporting the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) aboard JWST.
Don’t forget to get there on time for a quick round of astronomy trivia and special prizes! We’ll also have some (earth-based) telescopes out front for you to check out if the weather cooperates.
There is always lots of time to ask questions and interact with the presenters and other scientists who inevitably stick around for the beer. We can’t wait to see you there!
