Astronomy on Tap in the Triangle: Strange Stars and How to Find Them

March 6 @ 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM EST

Come check out Astronomy on Tap Triangle, our North Carolina chapter of short and engaging talks about astronomy over beer. Find us in the taproom of Fullsteam Brewery in Durham, NC from 7-9 PM on Wednesday, March 6th!

When we see them in the night sky, stars seem to be lone, eternal and unmoving specks.  While this may be true for stars like our Sun, nothing could be further from the truth for the tiny but savage hot subdwarf stars. Born in an act of cosmic cannibalism and thrown around in a close dance with their companions, they are a rare and exciting find for astronomers. But how can we know anything about these miniscule dots in the sky? And how do some of them get launched out of our galaxy? Come listen to Fabian Mattig (University of Potsdam, UNC-CH) to find out!

Don’t forget to get there on time for a quick round of astronomy trivia and special prizes! We’ll also hopefully have some (earth-based) telescopes out front for you to check out if the weather cooperates.

There is always lots of time to ask questions and interact with the presenters and other scientists who inevitably stick around for the beer. We can’t wait to see you there!
