Astronomy on Tap Leiden: Dust to Dust

June 26, 2023 @ 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM CEST

Our next event will take place on Monday 26 June at Grandcafé de Burcht (Burgsteeg 14, 2312 JS Leiden) at 20:00 CEST!
Join us for a night of stellar astronomy with two fantastic talks from Maria Arias and Sascha Zeegers, who will tell us about interstellar dust, where it comes from, and how it is crucial for us to be here today!
As always, there will be fun games where you could win cool science prizes!
Maria Arias: “Fireworks and the dust factory
María Arias is a post-doc in the Leiden Observatory. She looks for the aftermaths of exploded stars. She will be telling us about supernovae, the universe’s fireworks. Dust production and destruction are among the very many things they do that are crucial for the evolution of galaxies.
Sascha Zeegers: “Interstellar Soot and Sand
Sascha specialized in the properties of cosmic dust using X-ray spectroscopy during her PhD. After obtaining her PhD in 2018, her interest in dust took her to the Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Academia Sinica (ASIAA) in Taiwan, where she focused on infrared spectroscopy. Since October 2022 she works as a research fellow at ESA ESTEC. Her talk will focus on the exciting insights about the interstellar medium we recently obtained with telescopes like JWST.
Logistical information: We start at 20:00 sharp, so please arrive earlier to enter the bar, save a seat, and grab a drink. We are not planning to stream the event live, but will be uploading a recording of the talks on our YouTube channel after the event.
Join us for an evening of astronomy and fun games where you could win cool science prizes!
