On December 22, we’re celebrating the Winter Solstice – another year, another trip round the Sun, and dark nights great for astronomy. This left us asking… what happens in a year? What IS a year? So – let’s look at a year in the life… of other planets, of our galaxy, and more!
AND!!! Help us raise money for a NYC Science Classroom! We’re raffling off some fantastic prizes, and donating money through DonorsChoose.org. Prizes include:
- A pack from the Unemployed Philosophers Guild!
- Another pack from the Chop Shop store!
- Books and drinks from our friends at the Way Station!
- A bundle of astronomy and space books!
- A kid’s pack including space books, posters, and a placemat!
- A NASA/ESA swag bag!
- Mercury and Venus plush dolls!
- A Lego Women of NASA set (currently sold out!)
- The beer prize – a little Stella, a little Star Trek
- and of course treasures from our favorite celebrity astrophysicist, Neil Tyson!
- (we might even add more!)
$3/1 ticket, $10/4 tickets, $20/10 tickets! Buy tickets early through paypal to AstronomyOnTap@gmail.com (PLEASE include your name and contact info), or come on December 22nd.
You DON’T have to be present to win! But if you aren’t, you WILL have to pick up your prizes in Brooklyn.
We’ll be at the Way Station, starting at 7:30pm. Talks start at 8pm, prizes and raffle drawing at 10pm!
We’re inviting our favorite astronomers to tell us all stories, exploring who or what they are thankful for. We’ll be hearing about meaningful mentors, terrific telescopes, and maybe that special spectrometer. Join us starting at 7:30pm for the quiz, 8pm for the talks. Prizes at 10pm! RSVP and up-to-date info on our Facebook page.
Will you be watching the solar eclipse on August 21st? Whether you’re watching totality, or elsewhere (like here in NYC where we’ll still get about 70% coverage), the continental US will be under the shadow of the Moon! Join us at the Way Station in Prospect Height, Brooklyn on Wednesday, August 9th for a whole program about eclipses including the basics of eclipses, safety, and of course, the science! Free pair of eclipse glasses for all, more available for donations! Free posters! 7:30pm trivia, 8pm talks, 10pm prizes. RSVP on our Facebook event page, and see you there!
Join Astro on Tap NYC on June 29th as we focus in on water! Turns out it’s not so simple – water has interesting properties, and can help us learn a lot about where it was found. Join us at the Way Station in Brooklyn as we take a dive into subject and take a look at one of the most common molecules in the universe! RSVP on our event page for more info, and don’t forget your scuba gear!
Opening the good book, we turn to a passage proclaiming… ahem… “Space is big. Really big. You just won’t believe how vastly, hugely, mindbogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it’s a long way down the road to the chemist’s, but that’s just peanuts to space.”
Join NYC Astronomy on Tap on Thursday, May 25th for FREE at the Way Station as we celebrate Towel Day and Douglas Adams’ classic series, the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy! It’s all about Infinite Improbability Drives, whales and petunias, dolphins, and much more!
DON’T PANIC! But please, RSVP on our Facebook page to stay up to date on speakers and other info. 7:30 quiz starts, 8pm talks start.
This month, we are joining the Taste of Science festival to bring you Dinos on Tap! Special guest co-host Dustin Growick of The Dinosaur Show, and NYC regular, MC Tycho Brewhaha, bring you an evening of terrible thunder lizards, joined by our paleontologist friends from AMNH.
Tickets are $5 and are on sale now! And RSVP and stay tuned to our Facebook event page for more info. Proceeds from the event will help us fund a science classroom on DonorsChoose.org.
AND – check out all the other events our friends at Taste of Science are doing, here in NYC and around the country!
